History of Mothers Day
Celebrations of mothers & motherhood could be traced back to the ancient Greeks & Romans, who started celebrating this festival in great honor of the mother goddesses Rhea & Cybele, but the clearest modern precedent for Mother’s Day is the early Christian festival known as “Mothering Sunday.”
It was Once a major tradition in the United Kingdom & some parts of Europe, this celebration fell on the fourth Sunday in Lent & was originally seen as a time when the faithful could be returned to their “mother church”—the main church in the vicinity of their near home—for a special service.
Over time the Mothering Sunday tradition shifted into a more secular and changed holiday, and children started gifting their mothers with flowers and some other kind of appreciation. This custom eventually got popularity before merging with American Mother’s Day in the 1930s and 1940s.
