Olympics is a leading worldwide event highlighting winter and summer games competitions. Thousands of competitors from throughout the world participate in various games.

The modern-day Olympic Games’ creation is inspired by the ancient Olympic Games organized in Olympia, Greece, from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD.

In 1894, Baron Pierre de Coubertin introduced the International Olympic Committee (IOC), pointing to the inaugural modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is the Olympic movement’s governing group, with the Olympic Charter representing its structure and authority.

To encourage participation in the sport worldwide despite age, sex, or athletic ability, International Olympic Day was inaugurated in 1948. International Olympic Day is observed on 23rd June annually to honor the birth of the Modern Olympic Games.

During the 41st Gathering of the International Olympic Committee in Stockholm in 1947, Doctor Gruss, a member of IOC in Czechoslovakia, presented a report regarding the observance of Olympic Day.

The original idea was to support the Olympic concept and encourage more and more participation. One year later, the plan was approved at the 42nd IOC Session in Saint Moritz in January 1948.

The National Olympic Committee was in control of planning the events for this day and asked to select among 17th and 24th June. The planning committee ultimately concluded that the International Olympic Day would be celebrated on June 23rd annually.

 Thereby admiring the International Olympic Committee’s foundation at the Sorbonne, Paris. On this day, Pierre de Coubertin received the renewal of the Olympic games.

The inaugural Olympic Day was celebrated on June 23rd, 1948. On this occasion, Sigfrid Edstrom, Former President of the IOC, conducted a speech to all youngsters worldwide, encouraging as much participation as possible.

International Olympic Day’s importance is encouraging more people to compete in the Olympic sports and spreading awareness about the number of sporting competitions organized through this event.

In the 1978 edition of the Olympic Charter, the IOC suggested that every NOC organize an Olympic day each year and encourage the Olympic Movement.

What is Olympic Day Run?

Olympic Day Run is a movement activity held globally, encouraging mass participation of games organized in June. The aim is to raise participation in games by men, women, and children from every corner of the world despite athletic ability.

The first Olympic run took place in 1987, covering 10 km, with 45 NOC’s competing. By the time 2006, nearly 161 National Olympic Committees served this run to their countrymen.

The National Olympic Committees plan the Olympic Day Run between June 17th and 24th. There is a 1.5 km game run that gets created.

World Olympic Day is not defined only by sports activities. It is a serious international attempt to promote healthy–being and fitness in addition to Olympic ideals of Solidarity, Fair play, Respect, and Sportsmanship around the earth.

World Olympic Day is based upon the tri-pillars Move, Learn and Explore. NOC’s are deploying sports, educational, and cultural activities that address everyone despite age, sex, social background, or sporting ability.

In a few countries, the event is arranged into the school curriculum. NOC’s have added exhibitions and concerts as a portion of the Olympic day in recent years.

India’s Contribution on Olympic Day Run

India has been an active member of the Olympics for multiple years. India first played in the Olympics during the year 1900. Though they had been playing for several years, India had not won a decent reward until recent times. In current years India has left its imprint in the Olympics.
