National Ayurveda Day is celebrated each year on the occasion of Dhanvantari Jayanti. The day aims to build awareness in today’s youth and support Ayurvedic healing teachings in the community. Last year this day was marked on Nov 13, 2010. This time it happens on November 02.

Ayurveda is seen as one of the oldest and well-documented medicine methods fairly relevant today. Its holistic way, whether for healthful people or sick ones, remains unparalleled. Prevention of illness and improvement of health is the main purpose of Ayurveda.

World Ayurveda Day: History

The practice to follow the Ayurveda Day, which comes on Dhanvantari Jayanti, was begun in 2016 by the Union Ministry of Ayush (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Sidda, and Homoeopathy).

Dhanvantari Jayanti was favored to mark Ayurveda Day to nationalize this practice of medicine and make it worldwide.

About Dhanvantari Jayanti:

Dhanvantari Jayanti, the birth anniversary of God Dhanvantari, is observed on the 13th lunar day in Aswini Month. It is considered that on this day, God Dhanvantari appeared with Amurutha Kalasam.

God Dhanvantari is an Avatar of Lord Vishnu. He appears in the Puranas and Vedas as the god of Ayurvedic medicine and the physician of the gods.

God Dhanvantari is regarded as a perfect propagator of Ayurveda. He is presented with the values of admitting health and wealth. Therefore, Dhanvantari Jayanti was selected for the recognition of Ayurveda Day to nationalize this practice of medicine.

Why Is National Ayurveda Day Observed?

The Indian government has made this decision to support the students and practitioners of Ayurveda. A special day for Ayurveda will also raise awareness of Ayurveda in the community.

On this day, the Ministry of AYUSH honors 3-4 Ayurveda scholars with the National Dhanvantari Ayurveda Award. The award includes a trophy (Dhanwantari Statue), citation, and a cash prize of five lakh.

Principles of Ayurveda

Health care is a deeply individualized exercise under Ayurvedic teachings. All have a special character, or prakruti, that defines their physiologic, physical, and mental character and illness vulnerability.

Prakruti is defined by three “bodily energies” called doshas. There are three primary doshas, and though all have a few features of each, most individuals possess one or two that predominate:

1. Pitta

Pitta energy is connected to fire and is believed to manage the endocrine and digestive methods. Humans with pitta energy are believed to be fast-paced, fiery in temperament, and intelligent.

Ulcers, anger, heartburn, digestive problems, inflammation, and arthritis can occur when this energy is out of balance.

2. Vata

Vata energy is connected with air and space and associated with bodily movement, including blood circulation and breathing. Vata energy is considered to predominate in individuals who are creative, lively, and innovative thinkers.

This type can endure joint pain, dry skin, constipation, anxiety, and other diseases, when out-of-balance.

3. Kapha

Kapha energy, connected to water and earth, controls strength and growth and is linked with the torso, chest, and back. Kapha types are regarded as solid in the constitution and usually gentle in nature.

But diabetes, insecurity, sinus problems, obesity, and gallbladder problems can happen when Kapha’s energy is unbalanced.
