Rath Yatra Puri: The Puri Jagannath Rath Yatra is the biggest festival of the eastern coastal state of Odisha. Dedicated to Lord Jagannath (Krishna), his brother Balbhadra (Balaram) and sister Subhadra, the Rath Yatra is a spiritual event wherein devotees pull three giant wooden chariots carrying the deities. The Yatra that begins from the iconic Puri Jagannath temple to the Gundicha Temple is nothing short of a spectacle.
Rath yatra is also referred to as the chariot festival and it marks the journey of Lord Krishna along with siblings to their aunt’s place. This marks back 5000 years and has been a tradition from then on. People all over India and the world alike regard it as one of the holiest Hindu festivals. Rath Yatra is one of the main festivals of Odisha that commemorates the annual journey of Lord Jagannath and his siblings, Balabhadra and Subhadra from the 12th century Jagannath Temple to their aunt’s abode in Gundicha Temple. During Rath Yatra, a million devotees converge in Puri town believing that they would attain salvation by touching the ropes attached to the chariots. The legacy continues for 5000 years.
Every summer, on the second (Dwitiya) day of the bright fortnight (Shukla paksha) of Ashada (June–July), literally millions of pilgrims gather from all over India to join in the awesome and magnificent celebration in which the Supreme Personality of Godhead graces everyone – highborn or low, pure or impure, rich or poor – with his presence when he leaves his palatial temple and travels in the state to his peaceful summer retreat of Gundica.
The Gundica temple, founded in the 16th century, is another one of the most renowned temples in Puri. It is situated two miles northeast of the Jagannatha temple. At the time of the famous Ratha-yatra festival, Lord Jagannatha goes to the Gundica temple from His original temple and stays there for one week. After one week, He returns to His original temple.
