Sanskrit Diwas : Date, Key facts, history, and significance

World Sanskrit Day or Sanskrit Diwas is also identified as Viswa Samskrita Dinam. It is marked on Shraavana Poornima, which is the Poornima day on the whole moon day during the month of Shravana as per the Hindu calendar.

This year Sanskrit Day comes on the 12th of August, Sunday, 22 August in 2021. In 2020 it was celebrated on 3 August.

Sanskrit was listed as the second official language of Uttarakhand. The language has the most extensive vocabulary of around 102 Arab 78 crores 50 lakh words.

Sanskrit Diwas/World Sanskrit Day history

Sanskrit Diwas was first celebrated in 1969. It is honoured to spread awareness, promote and restore the ancient India Language. It connects the vibrant culture of India.

Sanskrit Diwas includes various events and full-day seminars discussing the value of the Sanskrit language, its impact, and developing this wonderful language.

In Hindu culture, puja and mantras are recited in Sanskrit, and the language is thought to have begun in India about 3500 years ago.

The Sanskrit is also termed Dev Vani, which means God’s Language. The language is determined back to the 2nd millennium BCE when the Rig Veda, a hymns set, is believed to have been composed.

• There are fifty letters in the language, of which the initial 16 are vowels, and the rest 34 are consonants.

• Sanskrit has an arranged grammatical structure. Even the consonants and vowels are provided in a scientific pattern. It is stated that a person can express themselves in Sanskrit in one word only.

• In Karnataka, there is a village where all talks are in Sanskrit. The name of the hamlet is Mattur in the Shimoga area.

• Sanskrit is declared an official language of Uttarakhand.

• In classical music – that is in Hindustani and Carnatic – Sanskrit is used.

• A Sudharma Sanskrit daily, which has an online version also, is issued from Karnataka.

Sanskrit Diwas is celebrated throughout the nation in all the colleges and schools that work from the national to the state and district levels.

During this event, celebrations of Sanskrit Kavi Sammelan, the speech of students, writer’s seminar, and recitation competition, etc., are arranged.

The scholars of Sanskrit are invited, and students acquire knowledge of the Vedic Language. Numerous cultural programs, workshops, and seminars are organized on this occasion.

Present Condition of Sanskrit Language

There was a period when Sanskrit was the most spoken language in the country, and now merely 1% of Indians practice the language in puja and slokas, etc.
